Choosing a veterinarian
Six things to know.
Visit before you need it
Meet the vet for a checkup while your pet is healthy, so they have a baseline when something goes wrong.
Bring your records
Vaccine history and past medical records save time and repeat tests at a new vet.
Ask about after-hours care
Find out who to call nights and weekends — many practices refer to a nearby emergency vet.
Compare wellness plans
Many clinics offer monthly plans that cover exams, vaccines and routine tests for a set price.
Fear Free and cat-friendly
If your pet is anxious, look for Fear Free certified vets or cat-only clinics with quieter, calmer visits.
Keep up with dental care
Most dogs and cats have dental disease by age three. Ask about yearly cleanings.
Veterinarians questions
How do I find a good vet near you?+
Compare the veterinarians listed near you by services, ratings and reviews, or request an appointment and vets near you will reach out.
How much does a vet visit cost?+
A routine exam is usually $50 to $100. Vaccines, tests and treatment cost more. Ask for prices when you book.
How often should my pet see a vet?+
Once a year for most adult dogs and cats, twice a year for seniors, and every few weeks for puppies and kittens until their shots are done.
What vaccines does my dog or cat need?+
Dogs: rabies and distemper/parvo, plus Bordetella, leptospirosis or Lyme depending on lifestyle. Cats: rabies and FVRCP, plus feline leukemia for kittens and outdoor cats.
When should I spay or neuter my pet?+
Often around 5 to 6 months for cats and small dogs; large-breed dogs may be better a little later. Ask your vet.
Do vets see exotic pets?+
Some do. Pick "Exotic Pets" or "Birds" above to find vets that treat rabbits, reptiles, birds and other exotic animals.
