Choosing an animal hospital

Six things to know.

Ask what's on site

Animal hospitals usually have surgery, X-rays and a lab in-house. Ask whether they also do ultrasound, dental X-rays and overnight care.

Who watches pets overnight?

Some hospitals keep a vet or technician with hospitalized pets all night; others transfer them to an emergency hospital. Ask before surgery.

Check AAHA accreditation

AAHA-accredited hospitals pass a voluntary review of hundreds of standards for care, safety and equipment.

Get an estimate

For surgery or a hospital stay, ask for a written estimate with a low and high range before treatment starts.

Know your nearest ER

If your hospital isn't open 24 hours, know which emergency vet they send after-hours cases to.

Ask about payment plans

Many hospitals accept pet insurance, CareCredit or Scratchpay for big bills.

Compare the animal hospitals listed near you by services, ratings and reviews, or request an appointment and hospitals near you will reach out.

What's the difference between an animal hospital and a vet clinic?+

An animal hospital usually does more in-house — surgery, X-rays, lab work and overnight stays. A clinic is often smaller and focused on checkups, vaccines and minor care.

Are animal hospitals open 24 hours?+

Some are. Many keep day hours and send after-hours cases to an emergency vet. Look for the "Open 24 hours" badge.

How much does pet surgery cost?+

A spay or neuter is often $200 to $800; dental cleanings $300 to $1,000; orthopedic surgery like TPLO $3,000 or more. Ask for a written estimate.

Can I visit my pet in the hospital?+

Most animal hospitals allow visits for longer stays. Ask about visiting hours and updates.

Do animal hospitals take pet insurance?+

Most do. Usually you pay the bill and your insurer pays you back. Many also accept CareCredit or Scratchpay.
