Before you go to an emergency vet

Six things to know.

Call ahead

Call on the way so the team can get ready and tell you if they're full or can't treat your animal.

Know the warning signs

Trouble breathing, a swollen belly, seizures, heavy bleeding, collapse, poisoning or not peeing are emergencies — go now.

Poison? Call a hotline

The ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (888-426-4435) and Pet Poison Helpline (855-764-7661) can advise right away (fees apply).

Expect triage

Like a human ER, the sickest pets are seen first. Stable pets may wait.

Bring what they ate

If your pet swallowed something, bring the package, plant or pill bottle with you.

Ask for an estimate

Emergency care costs more than a regular visit. Ask for an estimate and payment options before treatment.

Emergency Veterinarians questions

Where is the nearest emergency vet near you?+

Compare the emergency vets listed near you and call before you go. Listings marked "Open 24 hours" are open nights, weekends and holidays.

When should I take my pet to an emergency vet?+

Go right away for trouble breathing, seizures, collapse, heavy bleeding, a swollen or hard belly, repeated vomiting, straining to pee, eating something toxic, or being hit by a car.

How much does an emergency vet visit cost?+

The exam alone is often $100 to $250. Tests, X-rays, fluids and overnight care add to that, and surgery can cost thousands. Ask for an estimate.

Is an emergency vet the same as an animal hospital?+

Emergency vets are open after hours and focus on urgent and critical cases. A regular animal hospital does surgery and hospital stays but usually keeps day hours.

Do I need an appointment?+

No. Emergency vets take walk-ins and see the most critical pets first. Calling ahead helps them get ready.

What if my pet ate something poisonous?+

Call an emergency vet or a pet poison hotline right away — the ASPCA (888-426-4435) or Pet Poison Helpline (855-764-7661). Don't make your pet vomit unless told to.
