What to know

Six things to know before you buy tires.

Know your tire size

It's on the tire's sidewall, like 225/65R17. Have it ready for an exact quote.

Ask for the out-the-door price

Mounting, balancing, valve stems, disposal and tax can add up. Ask for the total, not just the tire.

Check the date code

The last four digits on the sidewall are the week and year it was made. Tires age even when unused.

Replace in pairs

On most cars, put new tires in pairs on the same axle — all-wheel drive often needs all four.

Ask about the warranty

Many shops include free rotations, flat repair and road-hazard coverage. Get it in writing.

When to replace

At 2/32" of tread they're legally worn out; at 4/32" wet grip drops a lot. Cracks and bulges mean replace now.

Tire questions

How do I get tire quotes near you?+

Fill in the form above with what you need and your ZIP. We send your request to tire shops near you, and they contact you with quotes.

How long do tires last?+

Most last 3 to 6 years or 40,000 to 60,000 miles, depending on the tire and how you drive. Replace any tire older than about 6 to 10 years.

Can a flat tire be repaired?+

Usually, if the puncture is in the tread and smaller than about 1/4 inch. Holes in the sidewall or shoulder mean a new tire.

Are used tires safe?+

They can be, if they have good tread, no damage and aren't too old. Ask for the date code and tread depth before you buy.

How often should tires be rotated?+

About every 5,000 to 7,500 miles, often at each oil change. It evens out wear and makes tires last longer.

What if I have a flat and can't drive?+

Choose 'No — needs a tow' in the form. We'll send your request to towing companies near you as well as tire shops.
