Broke down?

Get it towed, get a rental while it's in the shop, and find parts or tires.

What to know

Six things to know before you hand over the keys.

Get a written estimate

Ask for parts and labor in writing before any work starts, and ask the shop to call you before going over it.

Ask what the code means

A check engine light code points to a problem, it isn't a diagnosis. A good shop explains what they found and why.

Certified technicians

Look for ASE-certified mechanics and real reviews. Ask if they work on your make often.

Ask about the warranty

Most good shops guarantee parts and labor, often 12 months or 12,000 miles or more. Get it in writing.

Keep your old parts

You can ask for the replaced parts back. It shows the work was actually done.

Dealer or independent

Independent shops usually cost less; dealers have factory tools and parts. You can have routine service done at either.

Auto repair questions

How do I get auto repair quotes near you?+

Fill in the form above with what's wrong and your ZIP. We send your request to auto repair shops near you, and they contact you with quotes.

Why is my check engine light on?+

It can be anything from a loose gas cap to a misfire or a failing sensor. A shop reads the code and tests the car to find the cause. If it's flashing, stop driving and get it checked.

How often do I need an oil change?+

Many newer cars go 5,000 to 7,500 miles with synthetic oil; older cars and hard driving need it sooner. Your owner's manual has the exact interval.

How do I know my brakes need work?+

Squealing, grinding, a soft pedal, pulling to one side or a vibration when you stop. Get them checked right away.

Can an independent shop do my routine maintenance?+

Yes. You can have routine maintenance done at any shop — keep the receipts. Repairs covered by a factory warranty are usually done at the dealer.

What if my car won't start or drive?+

Choose 'No — needs a tow' in the form. We'll send your request to towing companies near you as well as repair shops.
