Auto Accident Lawyers

Usually not before talking to a lawyer — first offers are often far below what a claim is worth.

In most states you can still recover, reduced by your share of fault. A lawyer can explain your state's rule.

Usually nothing up front. Most work on contingency — a percentage of your settlement or verdict — so you pay only if you recover money.

Be careful. Don't give a recorded statement or sign anything before talking to a lawyer — early statements are often used to reduce claims.

Yes. Every state has a statute of limitations, often two to three years from the injury, and sometimes shorter. Talk to a lawyer early.

Start with what you need help with above. That narrows the list to attorneys who practice that area. Then compare ratings and reviews, and talk to two or three before you decide.

It depends on the case. Criminal and family cases are often billed hourly or as a flat fee. Personal injury attorneys usually work on contingency — a share of what you recover, and nothing if you don't. Ask each attorney how they charge before you hire them.

Usually you need one licensed in the state where your case is. Federal matters like immigration, bankruptcy and patents can be different — ask the attorney.
