Classically Dr. Bird’s first three generations of universal assister controller mechanical breathing devices (1946-1978) were called Respirators.

The current generation of electronic pressure volume cycled devices have been called ventilators and are designed for the mechanical ventilation of lungs which do not have peripheral diffuse bronchiolar airway and alveolar obstructive diseases. Pressure volume oriented ventilators will produce hyperinflational barotrauma within PREFERENTIAL PULMONARY AIRWAYS.

Dr. Bird’s fourth generation of percussive lung recruitment pneumatic breathing devices, called Percussionators®, are designed as powerful ventilators that maintain and also have a lung protective strategy. They recruit obstructed bronchial airways and their alveoli without the hyperinflational barotraumatic potential of over inflatingPREFERENTIAL Airways.

Therefore, there is a major difference between electronic pressure volume ventilators designed for lung maintenance in patients without diffuse bronchiolar airway obstructions or PREFERENTIAL airways, and Percussionators® which are designed to maintain, recruit and protect lung structures.

Advanced Percussive Sub Tidal delivery Lung Recruitment Percussionators® are designed to recruit the obstructed lungs of COPD patients who have PREFERENTIAL airways, without producing hyperinflational Barotrauma. After lung recruitment the Perussionators® become highly effective pulmonary airway secretion clearance and maintenance ventilators, with exceptional weaning provisions.
