Automated external defibrillators (AEDs) are devices that can automatically diagnose the potentially life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias of ventricular fibrillation and ventricular tachycardia in a patient, then apply an electrical shock to the heart with minimal intervention by medical staff. AEDs are used in cases of sudden cardiac arrest (SCA). They were designed to allow lay rescuers, such as security personnel or other bystanders without medical training, to use them. The device is typically used under direction from emergency services telephone operator via a landline or mobile phone connection. In some areas there may be designated public access defibrillation points where members of the public may quickly locate an AED for use on someone who has suffered SCA nearby.
