Discovering the Ancient Knowledge Systems of Hindus - HUA
This course is the second in a two-quarter cycle that logically and rationally evaluates present scientific facts in connection to popular narratives about the history of Hindu civilization. India's deep history is the history of the Hindu civilization, which dates back to ancient Indian prehistory. We use the term "Hindu" in a multifaceted framework that includes geographical, genetic, linguistic, cultural, and philosophical implications. The primary goal of this course is to analyze the best evidence available for what is typically left out of most school and college textbooks' historical narratives about Hinduism and India.
Course Content: Reconstructing Hindu History - The Omissions
Both commissions and omissions plague Hindu history as it is rebuilt in school and college textbooks. The course will look at the obvious absences, such as the ancient Indians' knowledge systems and their impact on the world over time, and will build a solid case for an early Hindu civilization that was knowledge-based. It will investigate the Hindus' ancient knowledge systems in subjects as diverse as (a) philosophy, (b) medicine, (c) math, (d) astronomy, (e) music, (f) technology, (g) arts, (h) sciences, (i) textiles, (j) metallurgy, and (k) architecture, among many others. It will also investigate available evidence regarding the outflow of knowledge from India to the rest of the world, from ancient to modern times.
Hindus are dismayed by the significant gaps in their western-reconstructed history, which is portrayed as unquestionable historical truth, validated by a western expert. The modern portrayal of Hindu history frequently fails to identify a Hindu's own civilisation. This 1-credit course will (a) expose students to original materials and efforts to reconstruct a more authentic narrative about Hindu history; (b) lay the groundwork for challenging existing narratives; and (c) present an evidence-based alternative narrative for Hindus' deep history.
The course will be multidisciplinary, drawing on a variety of original sources and curated content from published research articles in a variety of disciplines, as well as classic textbooks by a variety of writers. Key papers and class notes will be included in the course handouts.
This course is designed for students who desire a rational, logical understanding of ancient Hindu history and who wish to understand evidence from other disciplines. The course will provide the necessary background to grasp the many subject areas.
