Advanced Mimamsa Course: Exploring Epistemology in Hindu Philosophy | HUA
Epistemology, the study of knowledge, is a vital subject in the Indic knowledge tradition, encompassing both Vedic and non-Vedic streams. Various knowledge systems in Hindu philosophy systematically develop a science of knowledge, examining what can be known through human cognition, what can be inferred through reasoning but not perceived, and what remains unknowable within a particular philosophical framework.
While hermeneutics is a significant aspect of the tradition of PÅ«rva-mÄ«mÄá¹sÄ, important theories related to epistemology also exist in this system, with precise definitions of knowledge discussed in various Hindu knowledge systems. Mimamsa Advanced Course Content: The course focuses on the epistemology of the Bhatta school of Purva-mimamsa, as propagated by Kumarilabhatta. The course includes the detailed study of the text "Manameyodaya," which analyzes the classification of cognitions and their implications, including the origins and distinctions of each type of cognition. Course Objectives:
Understand and apply theories of empirical and non-empirical cognition within the Mimamsa tradition. Appreciate the classification schema used by the Bhatta school of Purva-mimamsa in analyzing cognition. Develop a deep appreciation for the intricate and precise nature of Hindu knowledge systems through the study of epistemology.
