5 Popular Water Treatment Plants and their Uses

Why do we need Water Treatment Plants?

Being a resident of Chennai, you might know the answer already. Yes. Less rainfall and water scarcity have compromised the quality of our groundwater. Often the water in Chennai is discoloured, foul-smelling and has a metallic taste. This has been the case for decades. Well, not anymore. Water treatments like Reverse Osmosis (RO), Water softening and Demineralization make our lives easier.

There is an urgent need to convert all the wastewater into fresh water as there is demand for freshwater throughout the country, especially in Chennai. So, people have understood the importance of water treatments like ETP, STP and Desalination. Freshwater is produced by treating the wastewater that comes out of domestic establishments, industrial units and saltwater bodies.

 5 Types of Water Treatments

There are 5 types of water treatment plants in Chennai. Though their processes and applications are unique, all of them serve the same purpose, to make water pure and consumable. They are named as,

1. Reverse Osmosis (RO)

This is a popular kind of water treatment plant in Chennai. It is widely used in homes, hospitals, industries and places where there is a need for pure and clean consumable water.

 2. Water Softening Plant

This type of water treatment engages a process called ion exchange to replace the unwanted ions with sodium ions. This water treatment plant in Chennai is used to convert hard water into potable water.

 3. Demineralization Plant (DM)

This is also an ion exchange process that removes the inorganic compounds from water. Demineralized water is used in the process of sanitizing scientific instruments and equipment.

 4. Sewage Treatment Plant (STP)

Sewage is nothing but the wastewater that contains domestic waste. Even this wastewater can be converted to usable water by Sewage treatment plants or STPs.

 5. Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP)

Effluent is the wastewater coming out of industries and factories. It contains harsh chemicals and is very toxic if exposed to public usage. According to the guidelines published by the Sewage and Effluent Discharge Manual of the Indian Government, every industry has to treat the effluent before it is discharged in the water bodies that are accessible to the public. So, Effluent treatment plants are becoming popular water treatment plants in Chennai.
