Pick an attorney who practices the area your problem is in — a DWI, a divorce and a car accident need different lawyers.
Attorneys are licensed state by state. You can confirm a license and any discipline with your state bar.
Ask how many cases like yours they've handled, how they usually end, and who will actually work on yours.
Know how you'll be charged — hourly, a flat fee or a share of what you recover — and get it in a written agreement.
You should know how to reach them, how quickly they respond and how you'll get updates on your case.
Read reviews from past clients, and look for an attorney who knows the local courts.
It depends on state law — typically the length of the marriage, the income gap and each spouse's ability to support themselves.
