Hello and welcome to Memory Card. We are here to embark on one final and perhaps fatal playthrough of games that have been forgotten in our past. As in the past when we would pull a few late-night booze, we may lose a friend or two, we might resort to drinking too many Hot Pockets. Let's look at how far we've progressed. Or , if we've regressed.
The early years of the aughts, as the world wide internet lit the world of gaming with LAN party possibilities, a kind of fantasy-based experience was born: the MMORPG which stands for Massive Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game, for you noobs.
There were games such as World of Warcraft or Guild Wars that allowed you to chat and interact with players from all over, and all you required was an internet connection. My favorite fantastical substance of choice was RuneScape, a game that included me and my friend teaming up to slay the Corporeal Beast and learn how to cook an exquisite monkfish, and play a few games of Gnome Ball.
That time of coming back from school and jumping on our shared computer and then our own, and leaving the door to our bedroom wide open to shouting strategies and beg for gold were one of the most memorable experiences I had growing up.
I've occasionally kept up with RuneScape over the years to make sure my account from 2005 remained intact. But it wasn't until about two months ago, when I received a text from a dear friend of my"Gamer" Squad* that simply read, "I want to play RuneScape," that I decided to embark on my journey into Gielinor.
Like any good MMO, the objective in RuneScape is different from player to player. Perhaps you'd like each of the more than 200 quests in order to earn Legendary Hero status. Maybe you'd like to master at least one of 28 skills required for the illustrious Skill Mastery cape. Maybe you'd like to earn billions flipping items at one of the Grand Exchanges.
You could become an asshole and go kill people who are seeking to kill you in the wilderness, too. That's not even to mention the mini-games, events around the world, fights, and holidays. The game is big. And it's clear Jagex has not ever stopped updating Gielinor. There's a myriad of new game titles, including RuneScape Mobile, which launches on June 17.
It was awe-inspiring to go back to the Grand Exchange and see people sporting armor and swords that looked like they could unleash god-killing force to smash my old, high-gloss dragon's armour, and the abyssal whip (that'd be amazing if you played it back in old school rs gold.
