6 Ways to Get The Most Out of Your Employees
business

If you're a business owner with employees, their success is your success. Variations in productivity, rate of turnover, and healthcare costs can all powerfully influence your bottom line — not to mention your satisfaction and peace of mind as an entrepreneur. When looking for employment, job seekers are increasingly focusing on a positive workplace climate; a trend that shows no signs of stopping. Establishing a great corporate culture is a crucial investment in your business. Here are several time-honored ways to develop a culture that fosters high yield and high levels of loyalty.

Be Approachable

Being a good listener is essential for a leader. Communicating compassionately and sincerely creates a culture of two-way communication that anticipates issues and mitigates problems. It's true that employees should problem-solve on their own and come to you with solutions — it's also true that attentive listening on your part will help you solve problems and share successes together. Emotional intelligence in the workplace equals an energized workforce.

Get Rid of Clutter

Clutter can mean a lot more than physical disorganization. It can also mean overly complex communication channels, bloated operational processes, and scattershot decision making. It's common to discuss efficiency vs productivity these days; one doesn't necessarily have to be at the expense of the other if you have systems in place to maximize efficiency. It's best to eliminate as much paper as possible — having a few analog tools is refreshing, but the backbone of your business should run on an e-platform. Physical space matters, too. If you have an in-person office, take a careful look at the layout. There might be ways to further maximize its efficiency and aesthetic appeal. Even virtual workers benefit from an emphasis on streamlined spaces and processes.

Have Clear Goals

Having clear goals, objectives, and benchmarks — communicated persuasively and set with stakeholder input — are key. They provide stability and accountability for all of your employees. SMART goals are the gold standard; specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-bound. By internalizing SMART goals and objectives, employees will feel an increased sense of investment and control. Then, it's an unambiguous process to gauge one's performance and feel invested in the success of the company. More than just a paycheck, there's a resulting sense of ownership and pride.

Focus on Purpose

The DNA of a business is reflected in its mission statement and core values; they set into motion the purpose of your service — the "why." Not only should they be spoken out and displayed; it's just as important that employees and leaders live them out daily. To teach is to demonstrate — values are more caught than taught. Meaning and purpose are then part of every employee's actions and affect every decision. To feel a sense of fulfillment in their work, and connection with those they serve, the best employees require a clear and compelling purpose.

Encourage Wellness

The wellness of a company and the wellness of its employees — physically, mentally, and emotionally — are inseparable. The enthusiasm and energy of motivated, healthy employees help to support an uplifted work environment. Helpful and constructive incentives and community/on-site resources can both be a part of what leaders provide. Leaders can provide both on-site and community resources for their employees, as well as constructive and helpful incentives. Consistency is critical; an emphasis on wellness should be a part of day-to-day work life.

Foster Work-Life Balance

If you're a leader, demonstrating optimal work-life balance will encourage your employees to do the same. You're sending a powerful message by what you do in addition to what you say. Seeking out recreation and personal connection in areas outside of work communicates your values — and will increase employee satisfaction and decrease burnout. It's the decision of those you supervise on how to allocate their professional and personal time; be a supportive example.

A strong corporate culture will improve your employees' productivity and your bottom line. Consider these suggestions to help your business thrive.
