5 Cybersecurity Tools to Keep Your Business Secure

Cyber threats are on the rise, and it is essential to be proactive instead of reactive in securing your company's confidential data. By choosing not to secure your business and invest in a cybersecurity strategy, you are at great risk for a devastating attack that can be extremely hard to recover from. Here are 5 cybersecurity tools that you can use to keep your business secure.

Antivirus Software

It may sound obvious, but one of the simplest and quickest ways to begin to secure your business is by procuring antivirus software. There are many different types of software available, both paid and free, but the most important thing to look for is a tool that will alert you if your computer becomes infected by malware and that will clean the infection completely. This type of software is certainly not a cure all, but it's a great step in keeping your data secure. Further, in the event that an employee clicks on a dangerous link or accidentally infects your network, network security tools such as these could save you from total devastation.

A Firewall

Another important tool to invest in is a firewall, which monitors both incoming and outgoing traffic to your network. Firewalls allow you to set your own security parameters and allow or disallow certain traffic, such as malware and viruses, from entering the network. They can also be used to keep certain people or IP addresses from gaining access. Again, this is just one piece of the security puzzle, but it is a great first line of defense for your business.

Strong Passwords

Passwords are a serious point of vulnerability, and 90 percent of passwords are weak enough to easily hack. Encouraging employees to create strong, uncrackable passwords is a great start, but it isn't enough. Even though your employees may have the best intentions, many people fall into the habit of creating passwords that are easy to remember, such as a pet's name or a street address. Further, employees need to remember to change passwords often and to store them safely to prevent a breach, but this can easily be forgotten when more pressing issues at work come up. A password tool can give you a secure, easy place to store all passwords so they are never forgotten. It can also be used to remind you to update your passwords every so often so you don't have to remember.

Staff Knowledge

This is not exactly a "tool," but equipping your staff with knowledge about their role in your company's cybersecurity can be a great way to prevent attacks. Educated employees are more likely to use smart internet browsing habits, and are also more likely to understand the importance of strong passwords. It may also behoove you to schedule some staff training that will teach employees how to spot suspicious links and scam emails that could be part of a phishing attack. As hackers become more skilled, these types of attacks are becoming more prevalent, and hacking attempts look more and more legitimate to uneducated users.

Regular Software Updates

Finally, updating your software regularly may seem like a bit of a chore, but it is an essential step in protecting your data. Oftentimes, software companies fix vulnerabilities and issues with their products in later versions of the software instead of "patching" or fixing the current release. So if you are running an old version, you could be putting your entire network at risk. Ensure that update notifications are turned on for every product that you use, so you can be made aware when a new release is available. Then take the time to schedule the update- even if it is inconvenient.

With cyberattacks at an all-time high, you can never be too careful with your business data. Use these quick and easy tips to get a head start on making your company's security strategy as ironclad as possible.
