In 1992, Dr. Juan Tapia-Mendoza founded the Pediatrics 2000 group. He was soon joined by a new generation of medical providers dedicated to working in underserved urban communities. In January of 1993, Pediatrics 2000 opened its doors at 150th Street and Broadway in West Harlem, NY: a federally designated health shortage community plagued with a high prevalence of asthma, teen pregnancy, obesity, and behavioral problems. Pediatrics 2000 introduced the concept of a private Pediatric group practice to the neighborhood and was the first open access clinic for a Medicaid eligible population in the area. Over the years, Pediatrics 2000 has partnered with major community institutions, including the National Health Service Corps and Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center to support and continue to advance primary care in underserved areas, promote educational programs to improve health literacy and foster medical research and pro bono work.
