Old State Capitol State Historic Site

A structure of political significance throughout its existence, Old State Capitol State Historic Site was the state house between 1840 and 1876. A Greek Revival building, it was completed in 1840. Designed by renowned American architect, John Francis Rague, the building's standout features include its grandiose courthouse, the Illinois House of Representatives chamber and its breathtaking crimson dome. The capitol's front facade is supported by an assemblage of four Corinthian stanchions that add to the structure's overall visual appeal. An interesting fact about the capitol is that it most notably held the candidacy announcements for both Abraham Lincoln and Barack Obama in the years 1858 and 2007 respectively; a testament to its longevity.
