Established in 1954, The Humane Society of the United States, also known as HSUS, is one of the largest animal protection organizations in the United States. The organization advocates for public policies, enforces existing laws and investigates cruelty matters related to animals. It provides a variety of medical and health care services in sanctuaries, rescue facilities, wildlife rehabilitation centers and mobile veterinary clinics. The Humane Society of the United States educates people about animal issues and conducts various protection programs. It publishes magazines for animal sheltering professionals. The organization operates an animal rescue team that responds during hurricanes and supports law enforcement agencies. In addition, it maintains the Duchess Sanctuary, which houses more than 180 abused and abandoned horses. The Humane Society of the United States also administers campaigns to confront national and global cruelties related to pets, horses and farm animals.
