Uranium: What It Is, How It's Used, And The

Connection To Nuclear Power

Uranium is a radioactive metal that is found in small amounts in the Earth's crust. It is mined and processed into yellowcake, which is then used to fuel nuclear reactors. The heat generated by nuclear fission is used to produce steam, which turns turbines and generates electricity.

Uranium can also be enriched to create fuel for nuclear weapons. Enrichment involves increasing the percentage of uranium-235, which is the isotope that undergoes fission when hit by a neutron. When enriched to around 90%, uranium can be used in atomic bombs.
